Experience the best of Svolvær
Svolvær is the main town of the Lofoten islands in Arctic Norway, a fishing harbour of red cabins beneath jagged peaks and the twin-horned Svolværgeita.

Svolvær sits on the island of Austvågøya, in the Lofoten archipelago, beyond the Arctic Circle. Red and ochre fishermen's cabins stand on stilts along the harbour, wooden racks for drying cod fill the shoreline in winter, and steep peaks rise directly behind the town. The twin-horned summit of the Svolværgeita, the Svolvær Goat, is visible from the harbour and is a classic climbing challenge.
Boat trips go into the Trollfjord, a narrow fjord with towering walls, and the small fishing village of Henningsvær, with its football pitch on a rocky outcrop, lies a short drive to the south-west. The Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg on Vestvågøya reconstructs a chieftain's longhouse, and sandy beaches such as Haukland and Uttakleiv, on the western islands, are framed by mountains.
Stockfish, cod dried on racks in the cold wind, is the product of the islands, and cod tongues, fish soup and fresh Skrei cod are eaten in winter and early spring. In summer the midnight sun shines from late May to mid-July, and in winter the northern lights dance above the peaks.
