Experience the best of Tromsø
Tromsø is a Norwegian city well inside the Arctic Circle, on an island among fjords and peaks, known for the northern lights and the midnight sun.

Tromsø stands on an island in northern Norway, linked to the mainland by a bridge and a tunnel, with jagged peaks rising across the sound. Founded in the eighteenth century, it grew as a base for Arctic hunters and explorers, and the Polar Museum recalls expeditions that set out from the harbour. The Arctic Cathedral, with its angled glass front, stands across the bridge, and wooden houses fill the old centre.
A cable car rises to Mount Storsteinen, with views over the island and fjords. In winter, the northern lights shimmer over the city, whose latitude of about 69 degrees north puts it under the auroral zone, and in summer the sun does not set from May to July. Fjords and mountain islands lie in every direction, among them Kvaløya, Sommarøy and Senja, and in winter whales feed in the fjords of the region.
Stockfish, reindeer, king crab and fresh cod and halibut from the Arctic waters are the local fare, and the Sami people of the north keep reindeer herding traditions. The dark period from late November to mid-January has no direct sunlight, but the sky glows blue at midday, and the aurora season runs from autumn to early spring.
