Experience the best of Aurlandsvangen

Aurlandsvangen sits where the Aurlandsfjord ends, a narrow arm of the great Sognefjord, with high mountains rising on every side. The village is the main settlement of Aurland and has a small harbour, a few shops and a long waterfront. A short way to the south-west, Flåm lies at the foot of a famous steep railway, and the Nærøyfjord, a narrow UNESCO-listed fjord, is close by.

The Stegastein viewing platform juts out from the mountainside high above the fjord and gives a long view along the water, and the Aurlandsdalen valley is one of Norway's best-known long walking routes, leading through gorges and past waterfalls. The Lærdal Tunnel, at 24.5 kilometres the longest road tunnel in the world, links the Aurland area to Lærdal and the east.

Goat cheese from the nearby hamlet of Undredal, including the sweet brown brunost, is the food most associated with the district, and the village also serves fresh fjord fish and lamb. Summer days are long and mild. Snow stays on the high ground through early summer, and autumn colours fill the valley sides.
