Skjolden lies at the innermost end of the Lustrafjord, itself a branch of the Sognefjord, Norway's longest fjord, with steep mountainsides rising on every side. It is a small village of a few hundred people, with a pier, a church, and farms on the lake and fjord shores. The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein came here to think and write in the early twentieth century, and later had a hut built above the lake.
The road over the Sognefjellet, one of the highest mountain roads in northern Europe, climbs from the village past glacier lakes into Jotunheimen National Park, home of Norway's highest peaks. Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on mainland Europe, lies to the west, and the Urnes stave church, a World Heritage site, stands across the Lustrafjord, reached by a short ferry from Solvorn.
Fish from the fjord, lamb, and brown goat cheese, brunost, appear in local cafés, alongside waffles and coffee. Summer is cool and green with long light evenings, autumn brings colour to the slopes, and the winter is long, dark and snowy.
