Bodø is a modern seaside city in Nordland, northern Norway, at about 67 degrees north, a little above the Arctic Circle. It was largely rebuilt after bombing in 1940, and its centre is a compact grid of low buildings, a harbour, and a cathedral with a separate bell tower. The Norwegian Aviation Museum, shaped like a propeller, and the Kjerringøy trading post, a preserved nineteenth-century merchant station, are the main sights.
Saltstraumen, a narrow strait about thirty kilometres from Bodø, has one of the strongest tidal currents in the world, with whirlpools that form as the sea pours through, and sea eagles circle above. Ferries and coastal boats leave for the Lofoten islands across the water, and the Svartisen glacier and the Helgeland coast lie within reach.
Fish dominates the table: dried cod, cod roe, fish soup and Arctic char, with reindeer and lamb from the mountain pastures. In midsummer the sun does not set, and in winter the northern lights appear above the harbour on clear nights.
