Stavanger stands on a peninsula in Rogaland, south-west Norway, with a harbour lined with warehouses, cafés and wooden buildings. Gamle Stavanger, the old town, has rows of white wooden houses on cobbled lanes, and the cathedral, begun in the 12th century, is among the oldest in Norway. Oil discoveries in the North Sea from the 1960s made Stavanger the country's oil capital, a story told in the Norwegian Petroleum Museum on the waterfront.
Lysefjord, a long narrow fjord east of the city, is walled by cliffs. Preikestolen, the Pulpit Rock, a flat-topped cliff 600 metres above the water, and Kjerag, where a boulder is wedged between rock walls, draw hikers. West of the city, long sandy beaches face the North Sea, the Sverd i fjell monument, three giant swords, commemorates a battle of the year 872, and street art covers walls across the city.
Fish, shrimp from the harbour and lamb mark the table here, and fårikål, lamb and cabbage stewed together, is the Norwegian national dish. The climate is maritime, mild for Norway and rainy, with light evenings in summer, and the Gladmat food festival takes over the quayside each July.
