Belek lies on the Mediterranean coast in Antalya province, east of Antalya city, where a long sandy beach backs onto a forest of umbrella pines. The area was developed as a resort from the late twentieth century, with large hotels and golf courses stretching along the shore. The beach is a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles, and parts of it are protected.
Belek's golf courses, set among the pines, are known across Europe. Nearby, Aspendos has a Roman theatre of the second century AD, one of the best preserved in the world and still used for concerts, and Perge and Side hold further Roman and Greek ruins. The Köprülü Canyon National Park, with its river rafting, lies in the Taurus Mountains inland, and the old harbour of Kaleiçi, in Antalya, is to the west.
Turkish breakfast with olives, cheese and tomatoes, kebabs, fresh fish, gözleme, pancakes filled with cheese or spinach, and baklava fill the menus, with piyaz, a white-bean salad, an Antalya favourite. Summers are hot, winters are mild and wet, and golfers favour the cooler months from autumn to spring.
