Itinerary

  1. The tour guide will pick you up in Lagos or another location in the Algarve, and then proceed to drive to Évora.

    2.5 h

  2. Constructed in the 16th century by Franciscan monks, who faced a pressing issue: the city's cemeteries were overflowing. To make room for new burials, many bones from older graves were exhumed and placed within the chapel’s walls, creating the spooky display of human remains you see today. This practice was partly driven by the aftermath of the Black Death, which had ravaged Europe and caused significant population loss. The chapel was designed to remind visitors of the transient nature of life and the certainty of death, with the phrase "We bones that are here, await yours" inscribed on its walls. It’s a powerful reflection of the time's attitude toward mortality and the cycles of life and death.

    1.5 h

  3. Giraldo Square (Praça do Giraldo) is the heart of Évora, a vibrant public space surrounded by historic buildings. It has been a meeting point for locals and visitors for centuries, offering a lively atmosphere with cafés and shops. The square is named after the knight Geraldo Sem Pavor, who helped capture the city from the Moors in the 12th century.

    25 min

  4. After visiting Giraldo Square, we'll enjoy a traditional Portuguese lunch before continuing the tour.

    1 h

  5. One of Évora’s most iconic landmarks, dates back to the 1st century AD. This well-preserved structure, with its imposing Corinthian columns, was likely dedicated to the Roman goddess Diana. It stands as a testament to the city’s rich Roman heritage, offering a glimpse into Évora's ancient past.

    30 min

  6. Also known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary, is a magnificent example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture. Built in the 12th century, it stands as one of Portugal's oldest and most important religious sites. The cathedral's imposing façade, vast interior, and beautiful cloisters make it a must-see attraction in the city, while its panoramic views from the roof offer a stunning perspective of Évora. The cathedral is a symbol of the city’s historical and religious significance, with a blend of medieval and Renaissance elements that reflect the evolution of architectural styles over the centuries.

    1 h

  7. When you’re ready, the driver will take you back to your specified address, just sit back and enjoy a stress-free ride home.

About Lagos

Lagos is a walled Algarve port with golden sea cliffs, sheltered coves, a gilded baroque church and a history of Portuguese navigators.

Lagos lies on the western Algarve coast, where the River Bensafrim meets the Atlantic. Its old town is enclosed by 16th-century walls and has narrow lanes, whitewashed houses and the small Santo António church, whose interior is a mass of gilded baroque carving. Explorers sailed from the harbour in the 15th century in the age of Henry the Navigator, and a statue of the prince stands in the square. The former Slave Market recalls a dark chapter of the Age of Discovery.
