About Nanjing
Nanjing, on the Yangtze in Jiangsu, was the capital of several dynasties and holds Ming tombs, city walls and a mountain mausoleum.
Nanjing has been a capital of China many times, most notably under the first Ming emperor and again in the Republican era. The Ming city wall survives for much of its circuit, with massive gates such as Zhonghua Gate, and the Confucius Temple area beside the Qinhuai River is full of lanterns, snack stalls and old shopfronts. Xuanwu Lake, a large park lake, lies beside the city wall to the north.
Top-ranked sights in Nanjing: Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre.
