Experience the best of Nanjing

Nanjing, on the Yangtze in Jiangsu, was the capital of several dynasties and holds Ming tombs, city walls and a mountain mausoleum.

Nanjing has been a capital of China many times, most notably under the first Ming emperor and again in the Republican era. The Ming city wall survives for much of its circuit, with massive gates such as Zhonghua Gate, and the Confucius Temple area beside the Qinhuai River is full of lanterns, snack stalls and old shopfronts. Xuanwu Lake, a large park lake, lies beside the city wall to the north.

Purple Mountain, east of the centre, holds the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, reached by a long stone stairway, and the Ming Xiaoling tomb of the Hongwu Emperor, approached along a spirit way lined with stone animals. The Presidential Palace, the Nanjing Museum and the memorial to the victims of the 1937 massacre are central stops. Beyond the city, Qixia Mountain turns red with autumn leaves.

Salted duck is the signature dish, served cold and pale, alongside duck blood and vermicelli soup, soup dumplings and a range of small snacks known as Qinhuai delicacies sold near the Confucius Temple. Plum blossom opens on Purple Mountain in February and March. Summers are hot and humid, and spring and autumn are milder.
