  2. Right beside the palace, this Romanesque cathedral has stood watch for nearly 1,000 years. The golden Virgin atop the dome is one of the city’s emblems.

    Passes by

  3. A beautifully landscaped park with winding paths, duck ponds, and cliffside views over the Rhône, Mont Ventoux, and the Pont d’Avignon below.

    Passes by

  4. You don’t need to pay to visit the bridge—its best view is from the ramparts or riverbank, where its truncated span across the Rhône becomes a symbol of legend and loss.

    Passes by

  5. A quieter, shaded square near a 14th-century church, filled with terrace cafés. It’s slightly off the tourist trail, making it a favorite with locals who want a slower pace.

About Avignon

Avignon is a walled Rhône city where the popes lived in the fourteenth century, known for its vast palace, a broken bridge and a summer theatre festival.

From 1309 to 1377 the popes governed the Catholic Church from Avignon, and the Palais des Papes, a huge Gothic fortress of pale stone, still rises above the old town. Medieval ramparts more than four kilometres long surround the centre. The Pont Saint-Bénézet, the Pont d'Avignon of the nursery song, stops halfway across the Rhône, with only four of its arches left.

Top-ranked sights in Avignon: Roussillon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Pont du Gard.
