Highlights
Chefchaouen, one of the most attractive places of the north of Morocco, stands between the Rif mountains as a small piece of Andalucía, what coupled with the blue houses confers a special allure to the city. This idiosyncrasy can be noticed in its cobblestone streets, its restaurants, its craft shops and its peace, what makes Chaouen a faithful reflection of the essence of the north of Africa. Take a walk through the compact medina, whose streets are painted in distinctive palette of blue and white, and see the blooming market where unique Riffian handicrafts are being sold. Experience the atmosphere of the 18th-century kasbah and take your time in the bustling cafés of the main square. Walk through the city’s well-preserved mellah, previously the home of a Jewish community.

Itinerary
The city of Chefchaouen is a not-to-be-missed element of any tour of northern Morocco. Explore the ‘blue pearl’ of the Rif Mountains on a full-day tour from Tanger to Chefchaouen. The city was founded in 1471 as a small kasbah (fortress) by Moulay Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami, a descendant of Abd as-Salam al-Alami and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Al-Alami founded the city to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco.[2] Along with the Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times.[3] In 1920, the Spanish seized Chaouen to form part of Spanish Morocco. Spanish troops imprisoned Abd el-Krim el-Khattabi in the kasbah from 1916 to 1917, after he talked with the German consul Dr. Walter Zechlin (1879–1962).

About Tangier
Tangier sits where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, a storied Moroccan port of whitewashed medina lanes, a hilltop kasbah and views to Spain.
The medina climbs from the port to the kasbah, where the old sultan's palace, Dar el Makhzen, holds a museum with views across the Strait of Gibraltar. The Grand Socco and Petit Socco were long the meeting points of the city, and their cafés recall Tangier's decades as an international zone that drew writers, musicians and artists.
Top-ranked sights in Tangier: Cape Spartel, Caves of Hercules, Tangier Kasbah.
