4. The Castle of Nice was a military citadel. Built on top of a hill, it stood overlooking the bay of Nice from the 11th to the 18th centuries. It was besieged several times, notably in 1543 and 1691, before being taken by French troops in 1705 and finally destroyed in 1706 on the orders of Louis XIV.

More than 80 years have passed, but the hotel-palace has not only not lost its unique charm, but, after a large-scale renovation in 2004, has added ultra-modern comfort to its former splendour.
