Itinerary

  1. Bang Pa-In, the Summer Palace used by King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, to retreat. He admired European architecture and the buildings are a mix of European and Oriental architectural styles. The beautiful gardens with lakes around the buildings make it a wonderful place to wander around.

    1.3 hAdmission included

  2. Wat Phra Si Sanphet was located inside the compound of the Grand Palace (the foundations of which are still visible) and served as the Royal Chapel. In Ayutthaya's heyday, this was the largest temple in the city. The three main chedis which have been restored contain the ashes of three Ayutthaya kings.

    40 minAdmission included

  3. Wat Mahathat was one of Ayutthaya’s most important temples. It enshrined Buddha relics and was the seat of the Supreme Patriarch of Buddhism and thus the center of Buddhism in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. One of the temple’s most photographed objects is the head of a stone Buddha image entwined in the roots of a tree.

    40 minAdmission included

  4. Although Wat Lokayasutharam is not one of the most famous historic sites in Ayutthaya, it is an impressive location to visit because of its huge reclining Buddha image. At 42 metres long and 8 metres high, the statue towers over the devotees who come here to make offerings.

About Bangkok

Bangkok is Thailand's exuberant capital, where gilded temples and royal palaces line the river amid street-food stalls, markets and skyscrapers.

The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, home of the revered Emerald Buddha, glitter on the old royal island of Rattanakosin. Next door, Wat Pho shelters a giant reclining Buddha and a famous school of Thai massage, and across the Chao Phraya River the porcelain-studded spires of Wat Arun glow at sunset.

Top-ranked sights in Bangkok: Temple of the Dawn (Wat Arun), Bangkok Chinatown (Yaowarat), Grand Palace.
