  3. The streets of Chamonix are overflowing with restaurants, each more enticing than the last. Whether you’re a team with your feet under the table or you prefer to cook, here are some local specialties not to be missed. Winter and summer, in the mountains, cheese rhymes with sharing.

About Chamonix

Chamonix is a mountaineering town in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, with glaciers, high cable cars and a long history of winter sport.

Chamonix sits in a narrow valley directly beneath Mont Blanc, at about 4,800 metres the highest summit in the Alps. Its first ascent in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard made the town the birthplace of mountaineering, and the first Winter Olympics followed in 1924. A statue in the square shows Balmat pointing towards the summit beside the scientist de Saussure.

Top-ranked sights in Chamonix: Aiguille du Midi, Mont Blanc, Chamonix Amusement Park (Parc de Loisirs de Chamonix).
