Experience the best of Chamonix

Chamonix is a mountaineering town in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, with glaciers, high cable cars and a long history of winter sport.

Chamonix sits in a narrow valley directly beneath Mont Blanc, at about 4,800 metres the highest summit in the Alps. Its first ascent in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard made the town the birthplace of mountaineering, and the first Winter Olympics followed in 1924. A statue in the square shows Balmat pointing towards the summit beside the scientist de Saussure.

The Aiguille du Midi cable car rises to a rock needle above 3,800 metres for views of the glaciers and, on clear days, of Italy and Switzerland. The Montenvers rack railway climbs to the Mer de Glace, a long valley glacier. Trails, including the Tour du Mont Blanc circuit, lead through meadows and forests, and a road tunnel runs beneath the massif to Courmayeur in Italy.

Tartiflette, potatoes baked with reblochon cheese and bacon, raclette, fondue and the pork sausages called diots warm the winter evenings, with génépi, an alpine herb liqueur, to finish. Winter is the ski season, and summer brings hikers, climbers and paragliders over the valley. Even in July the high peaks keep their snow.
