Highlights
Ioannina has always been the center of a pretty remote, until recently, region of Greece, and, as such, it had to cater for a variety of customers, from the mountain villagers who came to the city once a week for supplies to merchants and officials of the area. Their culinary needs varied enormously, which is why a rich and varied food culture exists for everyone, from local street food to haute cuisine.

About Ioannina
Ioannina is a lakeside city in Epirus, north-west Greece, with a walled citadel, Ottoman mosques, silversmiths and the Zagori mountains close by.
Ioannina sits on the shore of Lake Pamvotida, below the mountains of the Pindus range in the Epirus region of north-west Greece. Its walled castle, with the inner citadel of Its Kale, encloses the Fethiye Mosque, the Byzantine Museum and a museum in the Aslan Pasha Mosque, all reached through stone lanes. The old town has a long tradition of silversmithing, and craft shops still sell silverwork.
