Zihuatanejo lies on a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay on Mexico's Pacific coast in the state of Guerrero, and it has kept more of the feel of a fishing town than its neighbour Ixtapa, a purpose-built resort a few kilometres to the north-west. Fishing boats pull up on the town beach in the morning, and the Paseo del Pescador, the waterfront promenade, is lined with cafés and small shops.
Playa La Ropa is a long curve of sand along the bay, and Playa Las Gatas, a short boat ride away, is a sheltered cove with a reef good for snorkelling. Boats also run to Isla Ixtapa, an island with clear water for swimming. The lagoon and beach at Barra de Potosí, to the south, shelter many birds, and the surf beach at Troncones lies up the coast.
Fresh seafood is the heart of the cooking: ceviche, grilled fish in red chilli marinade, and tiritas, strips of raw fish cured in lime with chilli. Thursday is traditionally the day for green pozole, a pork and hominy stew. The dry months from November to May are the most settled, and heavy rain arrives from June to October.
