The Residenz, a Baroque palace built for the prince-bishops in the eighteenth century, is a World Heritage site, with a grand staircase under a ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo that is one of the largest anywhere. Above the river on the west bank, the Marienberg Fortress, long the bishops' stronghold, overlooks the city and its vineyards.

The Old Main Bridge, a stone bridge lined with Baroque statues of saints, links the old town with the fortress side, and people carry a glass of wine onto it in the evening. The cathedral of St Kilian, the Käppele pilgrimage church on a hill and the narrow lanes of the old town fill the centre, and Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays at the university here in 1895. The Romantic Road, which runs south to the Alps, starts at Würzburg.

Franconian wine, especially the dry Silvaner poured from the flat, round-bellied bottles called Bocksbeutel, is the pride of the city, grown on steep slopes along the Main. Historic wine estates run cellars and taverns, and the local table includes bratwurst, carp and hearty pork dishes. The grape harvest comes in autumn.
