Experience the best of Wenzhou

Wenzhou stands on the Oujiang River, not far from the East China Sea, and Jiangxin Island, a small islet in the river with two old pagodas, is its best-known sight. The city's economy grew from small family workshops in the late twentieth century, a path known as the Wenzhou model, and its streets are full of firms making shoes and electrical goods.

Yandang Mountain, within reach of the city, is a dramatic landscape of rock pinnacles, waterfalls and gorges, and it is a UNESCO Global Geopark. The Nanxi River, with its clear water and bamboo rafts, runs through hills inland, and the coast offers beaches and islands, among them the Dongtou archipelago, for day trips.

Seafood is at the centre of the local kitchen, with clams, crabs and whole fish cooked lightly, and the city is known for its fish balls, served in soup. Summer is hot and damp, and the typhoon season runs from July to September. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit.
