Tours stands between the Loire and the Cher, in Indre-et-Loire, and is the main city of the Touraine. The medieval centre round Place Plumereau is packed with half-timbered houses and café terraces, and the Gothic cathedral of Saint-Gatien has tall stained-glass windows and twin towers topped with Renaissance domes. Saint Martin, bishop of Tours in the 4th century, is honoured in a basilica built on the site of his tomb.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts occupies the former archbishop's palace beside the cathedral and holds European paintings from the Renaissance onwards. The Loire valley's châteaux lie within easy reach: Chenonceau arches over the river Cher, Amboise is where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years and is buried, Villandry has formal gardens, Azay-le-Rideau stands on an island in the Indre, and Chinon has a hilltop fortress.

Rillettes de Tours, potted pork, and Sainte-Maure de Touraine, a goat's cheese with a straw through its centre, are local favourites, with Vouvray, Chinon and Bourgueil wines to match. Spring and autumn are mild and the light is soft. In summer, riverside guinguettes serve food and drinks on the Loire banks.
