Toulon lies on a deep, sheltered harbour backed by limestone ridges, and has been home to the French Mediterranean fleet for centuries. Napoleon Bonaparte made his name at the siege of Toulon in 1793. The Musée national de la Marine at the old arsenal tells the story of the navy, and grey warships are often visible along the quays.
A cable car climbs Mont Faron, 584 metres high, to a summit with views over the harbour and a memorial to the 1944 landings in Provence. The old town's narrow lanes lead to the market on Cours Lafayette, which sells vegetables, fish, flowers and olives, and the opera house and the cathedral are close by. The Îles d'Hyères lie off the coast to the east, and Sanary-sur-Mer and the wine village of Bandol lie to the west.
Aioli with boiled vegetables, ratatouille, anchovies and grilled fish are typical of the table, with the red and rosé wines of Bandol alongside. Summers are hot and dry and the mistral can blow strongly through winter and spring, so May, June and September are the most comfortable months.
