Tijuana sits on the Mexican side of the border with San Diego, in the far north-west corner of Mexico, and has grown into one of the country's larger cities. Avenida Revolución, the long downtown street, is lined with shops and bars. The Centro Cultural Tijuana, with its spherical cinema nicknamed La Bola, is the main cultural centre, and the Mercado Hidalgo sells chillies, dried fruit and fresh produce.

Playas de Tijuana, a beach on the Pacific, lies at the western edge, where the border fence runs into the sea. Murals cover walls throughout the city, and the Baja California coast road leads south to the beach town of Rosarito, the port of Ensenada with its fish tacos, and the wine country of the Valle de Guadalupe. Tecate and its mountains lie to the east.

Tacos define the city, from carne asada and al pastor carved off the spit to birria, stewed meat served in a taco with a cup of broth. The Caesar salad is said to have been created here in 1924, and Baja Med cooking blends Mexican, Asian and Mediterranean ideas, using local seafood and produce. Local craft breweries complement the food. The climate is mild and dry, with rain in winter.
