Sayulita sits on a small bay on the Riviera Nayarit, north-west of Puerto Vallarta, with green jungle hills rising behind the beach. The town grew from a fishing village into a surfing spot, and its centre is a tangle of cobbled streets hung with bunting, small shops, and a plaza with a market. Huichol bead and yarn art is sold in the shops.
The main beach has gentle waves that suit learner surfers, while beyond a rocky point Playa de los Muertos has a small cemetery above a quiet cove. The nearby village of San Pancho is smaller and quieter, and Punta Mita and the Marietas Islands lie to the south. In winter, humpback whales visit Banderas Bay, and the jungle behind the town is home to birds and iguanas.
Fish tacos, shrimp tacos and fresh ceviche are served from beach stalls and small restaurants, with fruit stands selling mango with lime and chilli. Mezcal and margaritas are the usual drinks. The dry months run from November to May, and the wet months bring humid air, green hills and afternoon storms.
