Rouen stands on a bend of the Seine, and its streets hold many half-timbered houses leaning over cobbled lanes. The Gothic cathedral, with its lacy west front, was painted by Claude Monet in a long series of canvases, each in a different light. The Gros-Horloge, a Renaissance arch carrying a big astronomical clock, spans the main street.

Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431 in the Place du Vieux-Marché, where a modern church whose curving roof recalls an upturned boat now stands. Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen. The abbey church of Saint-Ouen, the Fine Arts Museum and the Seine quays are all in the centre, and the ruined abbey of Jumièges, in a loop of the river, lies a short way to the west.

Normandy provides the cream, butter and apples: duck is pressed in the Rouen style, sweets include sucre de pomme, an apple-flavoured boiled candy, and heart-shaped Neufchâtel cheese comes from the countryside to the north-east. Giverny, where Monet's garden lies, is a short ride to the south-east. Showers are frequent, which keeps the countryside green.
