Rehoboth Beach began in 1873 as a Methodist camp-meeting ground on Delaware's Atlantic coast, and it has grown into a family resort with a boardwalk about a mile long, a wide beach of fine sand and a bandstand at its centre. Rehoboth Avenue runs inland from the boardwalk, lined with shops, ice cream parlours and restaurants, and the nickname Nation's Summer Capital comes from the many Washington families who holiday here.
To the north, Cape Henlopen State Park has dunes, a long beach and a Second World War lookout tower, and the nearby town of Lewes began as a Dutch settlement in 1631, the first European settlement in Delaware. A car ferry crosses Delaware Bay from Lewes to Cape May, New Jersey. Dewey Beach lies immediately south, with Delaware Seashore State Park and Bethany Beach beyond.
Boardwalk fries splashed with vinegar, caramel corn, saltwater taffy and ice cream are the town's snacks, and steamed crabs and crab cakes fill the dinner tables. The beach is busiest in high summer, and the boardwalk is nearly empty in the colder months.
