Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by William Penn and was the capital of the United States for a decade in the 1790s. In Independence National Historical Park, Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 and the Constitution drafted in 1787, is a World Heritage site, and the Liberty Bell is displayed nearby. Elfreth's Alley, a lane of small 18th-century houses, is among the oldest residential streets in the country.
The Benjamin Franklin Parkway links City Hall, topped with a statue of William Penn, to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, whose front steps were made famous by the film Rocky. Along the way are the Rodin Museum and the Barnes Foundation's collection of paintings. The Reading Terminal Market, in an old railway shed, has stalls of baking and sandwiches. Eastern State Penitentiary and the mosaic-covered Magic Gardens on South Street are other curiosities.
The cheesesteak, thinly sliced beef and melted cheese on a long roll, is the signature dish, with soft pretzels, roast pork sandwiches and water ice. The Italian Market in South Philadelphia has fresh produce and cheese, and the Mummers Parade strikes up on New Year's Day. Valley Forge and the Brandywine Valley are within an hour.
