Baltimore, Maryland's port city on the Chesapeake Bay, is a city of brick rowhouses, harbourside museums and a fort that inspired the national anthem.

Baltimore, a long-time port on the Patapsco River near the Chesapeake Bay, spreads around its Inner Harbor, where an aquarium, tall ships and a science museum sit beside a promenade. Fort McHenry, at the harbour's mouth, was bombarded by British ships in September 1814 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner. Nearby, the cobbled waterfront of Fells Point is lined with eighteenth-century buildings, pubs and restaurants.
In Mount Vernon, the Washington Monument, the first major monument to George Washington, stands in a leafy square, close to the Walters Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Edgar Allan Poe lived in the city and is buried here, the Basilica of the Assumption was the first Catholic cathedral in the United States, and Camden Yards is the baseball ground. Annapolis and Washington, DC, are each about an hour's drive away.
Steamed blue crabs, heaped with spice, and crab cakes are the city's signature meals, with pit beef sandwiches and Berger cookies, thick chocolate-topped biscuits, also local. Snowballs, cups of shaved ice with flavoured syrup, cool the summer. The seasons are distinct, with hot humid summers and mild autumns.
