Puebla's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is laid out on a grid around the zócalo, with a cathedral whose towers are among the tallest in Mexico, arcaded buildings and façades covered in glazed Talavera tiles. The Rosary Chapel in the Santo Domingo church is covered in gilded plaster, and the Palafoxiana Library, founded in 1646, is among the oldest in the Americas, with shelves of antique books.
The Casa del Alfeñique, a sugar-white eighteenth-century house, and the Barrio del Artista are close to the centre, and the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe stand on the ridge where Mexican forces defeated the French on 5 May 1862. Cholula, to the west, has the Great Pyramid, the largest pyramid in the world by volume, topped with a small church. The volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl line the horizon.
Mole poblano, a dark sauce of chilli, nuts, spices and chocolate poured over turkey, is the city's most famous dish, and chiles en nogada, stuffed peppers in walnut sauce, arrive in late summer. Cemitas sandwiches, tacos árabes, camotes, candied sweet potato, and rompope, an egg liqueur from convent kitchens, are local favourites. The highland climate is mild, with rain in summer afternoons.
