Perpignan is the main city of French Catalonia, in the far south of France between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, and Catalan is heard in its streets and seen on signs. The Castillet, a red-brick gatehouse from the fourteenth century, stands over the old town, and the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, a fortress-palace on the hill, has a courtyard of arches and galleries.
The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist rises above the old lanes, and the Loge de Mer, once a merchants' exchange, is a short walk away. Salvador Dalí declared the railway station the centre of the universe. Collioure, a fishing port made famous by the painters Matisse and Derain, lies on the coast to the south-east, and the peak of Canigou rises to the south-west.
Local specialities include Collioure anchovies, crema catalana, a vanilla custard with a burnt sugar top, and sweet fortified wines from Rivesaltes and Banyuls. Peaches, apricots and cherries ripen on the Roussillon plain. The city is sunny for much of the year, and the dry tramontane wind sweeps down from the mountains.
