Page sits on a sandstone mesa above the Colorado River in northern Arizona, close to the Utah border. It was founded in 1957 as a camp for the builders of Glen Canyon Dam, whose concrete arch holds back Lake Powell, a long reservoir of blue water winding through red canyons. The lake and its branching side canyons are used for boating and houseboats, and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area protects the shoreline.
The sights around town are famous: Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon on Navajo land where beams of light fall through narrow sandstone walls, and Horseshoe Bend, an overlook high above a tight turn of the Colorado. Lees Ferry, downriver, is the starting point for Grand Canyon rafting trips, and Rainbow Bridge, a vast natural arch, is reached by boat. Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon are both within a few hours' drive.
The Navajo taco, fried bread topped with beans, meat and vegetables, is a regional meal, alongside steaks and diner food, and Navajo jewellery and rugs are sold by their makers at roadside stalls. Spring and autumn are pleasant in this desert climate, summers are very hot, and winters are cold with the odd dusting of snow.
