Experience the best of Washington DC

Washington, DC is the US capital, a planned city on the Potomac, with a National Mall of monuments and museums and cherry trees in spring.

Washington was planned as a capital in the 1790s, with broad avenues radiating from the Capitol. The National Mall stretches from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, past the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool. Memorials to Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt and Martin Luther King Jr stand around the Tidal Basin, where cherry trees bloom in late March or early April. The White House stands just north of the Mall.

The Smithsonian museums line the Mall, covering air and space, American history, natural history and art, and the National Gallery of Art sits alongside. Georgetown has cobbled streets and canal-side walks, and Arlington National Cemetery is across the river in Virginia. Mount Vernon, George Washington's riverside estate, and Old Town Alexandria are within an hour, Annapolis and Baltimore are close, and Shenandoah National Park is about two hours west.

Local specialities include half-smoke sausages, Maryland blue crab and Ethiopian cooking, thanks to a large Ethiopian community. Spring, with its cherry blossoms, and autumn are the best seasons for walking between the monuments. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are cold with occasional snow.
