Montpellier's old centre, the Écusson, is a shield-shaped web of lanes closed to cars, centred on the oval Place de la Comédie, where the Three Graces fountain stands in front of the 19th-century opera house. The cathedral of Saint-Pierre has a vast porch resting on two cylindrical pillars. The city is a university town, and its medical faculty dates back to the Middle Ages.
The Promenade du Peyrou, a raised terrace with a triumphal arch and an 18th-century water tower, looks out towards the Cévennes on clear days. The Jardin des Plantes, founded in 1593, is France's oldest botanical garden, and the Musée Fabre holds Old Master and modern paintings. To the south, the beaches of Palavas-les-Flots and the pyramid-shaped apartment blocks of La Grande-Motte face the Mediterranean, with the Camargue to the east and the canal port of Sète to the south-west.
Oysters from Bouzigues on the Étang de Thau, tielle sétoise, an octopus pie, and white wines such as Picpoul de Pinet suit the local table. Summers are hot and dry, with strong northerly winds at times, and spring and autumn are mild and bright, so the café terraces of the Place de la Comédie stay full for much of the year.
