Monteverde is a scattering of farms and small villages on the Tilarán Mountains, around 1,400 metres up, where moist winds from the Caribbean wrap the ridge in cloud. Quaker families from the United States settled here in the 1950s and began dairy farming, and they helped protect the forest above. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve and the neighbouring Santa Elena Reserve preserve mossy trees, ferns, orchids and hanging vines.
Suspension bridges and walkways let visitors cross the treetops, and the area is known for more than four hundred bird species, including the resplendent quetzal, as well as hummingbirds, sloths and bats. Zip-line courses run over the canopy. Lake Arenal and its volcano lie across the hills to the north-east, and coffee farms open on the lower slopes.
Local coffee, sugar cane and cheese are all produced on farms around the village, the dairy tradition surviving in a cheese factory founded by the early Quakers. Gallo pinto, rice and black beans, is breakfast. The air is cool and often damp, and the clearest months run from February to April.
