Quepos sits on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, a fishing town and former banana port now surrounded by oil palm plantations and forested hills. Its marina brings in boats chasing sailfish and marlin, and a small main street has shops, simple restaurants and a stretch of seafront. The town is the base for the nearby national park, a few kilometres away along a hilly road.

Manuel Antonio National Park, though one of the smallest in the country, holds white-faced capuchin monkeys, two- and three-toed sloths, iguanas and raccoons along forest trails that end at calm, curving beaches. Squirrel monkeys, rare outside this region, also live in the park. Boats enter the mangroves of Damas Island, and the Savegre River south of town is used for rafting.

A casado, a plate of rice, black beans, plantain, salad and fish or chicken, is the standard lunch, and fruit stands sell pineapple, mango and watermelon. Most of the rain falls between May and November, which keeps the forest green.
