Liberia is the main town of Guanacaste, the dry north-west of Costa Rica, and gets its nickname, the White City, from its whitewashed colonial houses and the white gravel once laid on its streets. Cattle ranching shaped the province and its cowboys, the sabaneros, still ride the open plains. Low houses and a simple town square give the centre a provincial feel, and the airport brings travellers into the whole region.

North-east of the town, Rincón de la Vieja National Park climbs a volcano with hot springs, mud pots, waterfalls and forest trails. Santa Rosa National Park, to the north-west, protects dry tropical forest and a coast where turtles nest. The beaches of Playa Hermosa, Papagayo and Tamarindo are all within an hour or so of the town, to the west.

Gallo pinto, rice and black beans fried together, opens the day, with corn tortillas and the local white cheese, and the ranch country supplies the beef. Guanacaste is the driest part of Costa Rica, with a long dry season from about December to April and a green rainy season that turns the plains bright.
