The near-perfect cone of the Arenal Volcano rises above the town, and Arenal Volcano National Park has trails through old lava flows and rainforest with views of the summit. Lake Arenal, the largest lake in the country, spreads to the west, with kayaking, fishing and windsurfing on its breezy waters and green hills all around.
La Fortuna Waterfall plunges into a jungle pool at the bottom of a steep staircase, and hanging bridges lead through the forest canopy, alive with toucans, sloths and monkeys. Rivers and pools warmed by the volcano's heat offer soaking after an active day, while canyoning, white-water rafting and zip lines add adrenaline. The sky-blue Río Celeste lies in Tenorio Volcano National Park, a scenic drive away.

The dry season from December to April brings a better chance of clear volcano views, while the green season is lush with afternoon rain.
