Jacó is a beach town on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, about two hours by road from San José. A long crescent of dark sand curves along the shore, with steady waves that have made it a surfing centre, and surf schools, cafés and small hotels line the main street. A few kilometres south, Playa Hermosa has heavier breaks that host surfing competitions.
Carara National Park, a patch of transitional forest north of town, shelters scarlet macaws, and the Tárcoles River beneath the highway bridge is full of crocodiles. Manuel Antonio National Park, with its monkeys and beaches, is about an hour's drive south. Waterfalls and zip-line courses lie in the hills behind the coast.
Casados, plates of rice, beans, plantain and a choice of fish, chicken or beef, are the standard lunch, and ceviche is made with the day's Pacific catch. Coconut water and fruit smoothies are sold along the beach. The surf is good year-round, and the dry season from December to April brings the steadiest sunshine.
