Playa Hermosa lies in the Gulf of Papagayo on the Pacific side of north-west Costa Rica, in the province of Guanacaste. The beach curves around a calm bay, with a few hotels and restaurants along it and low hills of dry forest behind. It is small and relaxed, with Playas del Coco, the nearest larger beach town, a short drive to the south-west.
The sea is warm and usually gentle, good for swimming, paddleboarding and snorkelling, and boats head out to offshore rocks and islands for diving. Inland, Guanacaste's dry tropical forest holds howler monkeys, parrots and iguanas, and Rincón de la Vieja National Park, with its volcano, hot springs and waterfalls, is a long day trip. Liberia's airport lies less than an hour away by road.
Fresh fish, ceviche and casados of rice, beans and plantain are the local fare, with gallo pinto, rice and beans fried together, at breakfast. This is among the driest corners of Costa Rica, with clear skies between December and April, when breezes can blow strongly. From May to November the hills turn green and short afternoon downpours are common.
