Monterrey is the capital of the northern state of Nuevo León, a modern industrial city beneath the jagged peaks of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The Cerro de la Silla, a saddle-shaped mountain on its eastern edge, is the city's emblem. The Macroplaza, a long chain of plazas and gardens, runs through the centre past the cathedral, the Faro del Comercio beacon and the MARCO contemporary art museum.
Fundidora Park, built around a former steel foundry whose furnaces still stand, has lakes, museums and a canal, and Barrio Antiguo, the old quarter, has colourful houses with galleries and bars. In the mountains south of the city, Chipinque ecological park has pine forest, and the Cola de Caballo waterfall lies near Santiago. The Grutas de García caves, reached by cable car, are to the west.
Cabrito, roast kid goat cooked over embers, and carne asada, grilled beef, are staples of the table, with machacado con huevo, dried shredded beef scrambled with eggs, for breakfast, and flour tortillas on the side. Summers are very hot, so autumn and spring are the most comfortable seasons.
