The beaches along the Hip Strip, as Gloucester Avenue is known, are the centre of seaside life, with clear water, bars and craft stalls, and Doctor's Cave Beach has drawn bathers for generations. Offshore, the Montego Bay Marine Park protects coral reefs and seagrass beds that reward snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips.

History lives in the great houses of the surrounding hills. Rose Hall, wrapped in the legend of the White Witch, and Greenwood Great House recall the island's plantation past, and Sam Sharpe Square in the town centre honours the leader of the great slave rebellion of 1831. Drifting on a bamboo raft down the Martha Brae River or the Great River is a gentle way to see the countryside.

Jerk chicken and pork smoked over pimento wood, ackee and saltfish, flaky patties and fried fish with festival dumplings are on every local menu. The dry season from mid-December to April is the most popular time, while summer and autumn are warmer and fall within the hurricane season. Negril's long beach and Dunn's River Falls are favourite trips.
