Runaway Bay lies on the north coast of Jamaica in St Ann parish, between Discovery Bay and St Ann's Bay. It is a small coastal community with a long strip of beach, coral reef offshore and a handful of hotels and restaurants rather than a big town. The calm Caribbean sea here is good for swimming, snorkelling and paddling.

The Green Grotto Caves, a system of limestone caverns with an underground lake, are said to have sheltered the Spanish, runaway enslaved people and smugglers, and can be explored with a guide. Christopher Columbus first reached Jamaica along this stretch of coast in 1494, and Dunn's River Falls and the town of Ocho Rios are a short drive east. Nine Mile, the birthplace of Bob Marley, lies in the hills inland.

Jamaican cooking here means jerk from roadside smokers, fried fish with bammy, curry goat, and ackee and saltfish for breakfast. Rum, coconut water and strong Jamaican coffee are everywhere. The weather is warm all year; December to April is the most comfortable stretch, and hurricane risk is highest between August and October.
