Lucea sits on a sheltered bay on the north-west coast of Jamaica and is the main town of Hanover, one of the island's smallest parishes. The harbour, almost enclosed and reached by a narrow channel, served the sugar estates of Hanover in the eighteenth century, and Fort Charlotte, built to guard the entrance, still stands with its old guns. The town itself is small and quiet.

To the west, Negril's long beach and cliffs lie within an hour's drive, and to the east the coast road leads to Montego Bay and its airport, passing Hopewell on the way. Inland, the hills of Hanover are green with farmland, banana plants and forest, and rivers run down to the sea.

The food is Jamaican: jerk chicken and pork smoked over pimento wood, fried fish with bammy, a cassava flatbread, rice and peas, and ackee and saltfish. Fruit comes from roadside stalls, with mango, June plum and sweet pineapple. The sea is warm all year, and heavy showers come in the wetter months.
