Negril lies at Jamaica's western tip, split into two stretches: Seven Mile Beach on the flat coast, with soft pale sand and calm turquoise water, and the West End, where low coral cliffs drop into deep sea. A red-and-white lighthouse stands on the south-western point. The place has a laid-back feel and a reggae soundtrack, with beach bars and small hotels rather than high-rises.

On the West End, daredevils jump from the cliffs into clear water and snorkellers drift along the rocks. Sunsets are watched from the clifftops and from the sand. The Royal Palm Reserve protects a swampy wetland with birds and other wildlife, and boats head out to reefs. Further afield, YS Falls and the fishing village of Treasure Beach lie in St Elizabeth, and Montego Bay is about ninety minutes east.

Fresh fish, jerk chicken, conch soup and vegetarian Rastafarian ital cooking are on offer at beach shacks, with fruit juices and rum drinks alongside. Reggae plays through the day. The driest, brightest months run from December to April; summer is hotter and showery, and the hurricane season peaks from August to October.
