Falmouth was laid out in the late eighteenth century as a sugar-trade port, and its grid of streets still holds a fine collection of Georgian buildings. Walkers pass the courthouse, old warehouses and the Baptist church that honours William Knibb, an English missionary who campaigned against slavery. A modern cruise port sits at the harbour's edge.

Inland, bamboo rafts glide down the calm Martha Brae River, and the Luminous Lagoon east of town glows at night with tiny organisms that light up when the water is disturbed. Great houses such as Good Hope recall the plantation era. Rolling forested hills lead south to Cockpit Country, and Montego Bay lies along the coast to the west and Ocho Rios to the east.

Jamaican meals mean jerk chicken or pork smoked over pimento wood, ackee and saltfish, curried goat, patties and fried festival dumplings. Coconut water and rum punch cool the day. Skies are sunniest from mid-December to April; the hurricane season runs from June to November, with heavy rain possible in May and October.
