Mont-Saint-Michel rises from the sands of a wide bay at the mouth of the Couesnon river, on the border of Normandy and Brittany. According to tradition the first sanctuary was built here in 708, and over the centuries a Benedictine abbey grew up the rock in granite tiers, topped by a church and a spire. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One steep lane, the Grande Rue, winds up past old houses and the ramparts to the abbey. The tides here are among the highest in Europe, rising and falling by as much as fourteen metres, and the bay sands reveal themselves at low water. Avranches, with manuscripts from the abbey in its museum, lies to the east, and Saint-Malo and the oyster town of Cancale lie to the west.

Lamb raised on the salt meadows of the bay is the local speciality, with apple-based cider and calvados, buttery biscuits and salted-butter caramel. The bay changes with every tide, from miles of wet sand to open water lapping at the rock, and the weather there turns quickly in any season.
