Mission Beach is a long stretch of coast south of Cairns made up of villages such as Bingil Bay, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach. Palms line the sand, and tropical rainforest of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area grows down almost to the beach. Fishing boats and kayaks share the shore, and the pace of life is slow.
The area has a notable population of southern cassowaries, and road signs warn drivers to slow for the big flightless birds. Dunk Island, a national park island, lies a few kilometres offshore, and the outer Great Barrier Reef is farther out. Walking tracks lead through Djiru National Park and up Clump Mountain for views over the coast.
Bananas, sugar cane and tropical fruit grow on the surrounding plain, and cafés serve them alongside fresh seafood. Heavy rain falls between December and April, and the rest of the year is drier and sunnier.
