Three rivers meet Lake Michigan at Milwaukee, on its western shore, and the city was shaped by waves of German and Polish immigrants who built its breweries, tanneries and factories. The Milwaukee Art Museum, a lakefront building by Santiago Calatrava with a huge sunshade whose wings open and close, is the city's emblem. The RiverWalk follows the Milwaukee River through downtown, past restaurants and a bronze statue of the Fonz from the sitcom Happy Days.
The Domes, three beehive-shaped glass conservatories in Mitchell Park, hold desert, tropical and seasonal gardens. The Milwaukee Public Museum has a re-created street of old Milwaukee and a butterfly garden. Bradford Beach lines the lake, and Summerfest, a huge music festival, runs on the lakefront each summer. Chicago lies about 130 km to the south.
Bratwurst, cheese curds and the Friday fish fry are Wisconsin traditions, with frozen custard for dessert and a brandy Old Fashioned to drink. Kringle, a flaky Danish pastry from nearby Racine, is a local treat. The lake breeze cools the summer festivals, and winters are cold and snowy.
