Mazatlán wraps around a rocky peninsula and a long curve of sandy beach on the Pacific, with a seafront promenade, the malecón, running for many kilometres. The historic centre is built around the Plazuela Machado, a square of cafés and live music, with the nineteenth-century Ángela Peralta Theatre and the cathedral nearby. A lighthouse stands on a high hill at the harbour mouth. The name means place of deer in Nahuatl.
Cliff divers leap from a rock above the sea at Olas Altas, boats cross to Stone Island for beaches and palm-roofed seafood restaurants, and humpback whales pass offshore from December to March. Inland, the old mining towns of Concordia and Copala keep colonial churches and cobbled lanes in the foothills of the Sierra Madre.
Shrimp comes first here: aguachile, ceviche, shrimp tacos and pescado zarandeado, fish grilled open over coals. Banda music from Sinaloa pours from restaurants, and Carnaval, held before Lent, is one of the largest in Mexico. Winters are dry and warm, and summers are hot, humid and stormy.
