M'Hamid El Ghizlane lies at the southern end of the Draa Valley in south-eastern Morocco, where the road ends and the Sahara begins. The village is a small place of mud-brick houses and a market, set among palm groves watered by the Draa river, which usually runs dry before it reaches the Atlantic. Berber and Arab families live here, and for centuries caravans crossed the desert from this edge of the sand.
To the west, the tall dunes of Erg Chigaga roll away for many kilometres, and the smaller dunes of Erg Lehoudi lie closer to the village. Camel treks and four-wheel-drive tracks lead to tented camps among the sand, and the dry bed of Lake Iriki, a huge flat plain, lies not far away. Zagora and the kasbahs and palm oases of the Draa Valley lie to the north.
Meals are simple desert fare: tagine of lamb or chicken cooked over charcoal, couscous, flat bread and sweet mint tea poured from a height into small glasses. Dates from the palm groves are eaten fresh or dried. Summer days are very hot and winter nights cold, and the cooler months from October to April are best for the dunes.
